Pivka - the land of intermittent lakes and bears

Organized adventures

Watching bears in natural environment

We take an off-road vehicle to the Javornik forests, where bears still live in their natural environment. Along the way, we also see the Petelinjsko intermittent lake and the Pivka valley. We get acquainted with its history and geographical features and continue our way through the forest to the observation point. There we climb a tree or go to an observation house where we wait for the bears and observe them when they arrive. Along the way, we learn a lot about their life and place in nature. The tour is not suitable for children under 8 years of age. Peace and quiet are required while waiting for and watching the bears.

Duration: 3 to 4 hours
Difficulty: 500 m walk
Equipment: Hiking boots, warm clothes, courage, patience

Palška adventure

Visit to the museum of traditional tools in the village of Klenik. There we get to know the way of life of people in the Pivka region 100 or more years ago – how they managed everyday tasks, how they lived and spent their free time.

Visit to the Palško intermittent lake – the largest lake in the Pivka region, which covers up to 100 ha when full. In the summer months it is mostly dry, but still worth a visit because of its rich flora and fauna.

We will visit Matija cave, which lies on the edge of Palško lake and is the largest sinkhole of the lake, functioning both as a spring and a swallow hole. Above the lake we visit the ruins of the church of St. Margaret with a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape.

Duration: 3 to 4 hours
Difficulty: 3 km walk, access also possible by car
Equipment: Hiking boots, suitable clothing

Trnska adventure

We start the journey by visiting the museum of intermittent lakes in Slovenska vas, where we learn why lakes appear and disappear. We get acquainted with their flora and fauna and the world of the Javornik forests.

We visit Petelinjsko lake – the second largest lake in the Pivka region. In the summer months it is mostly dry, but still worth a visit. The area is characterized by great biodiversity; researchers have recorded 182 species of plants, 211 species of beetles, 106 species of butterflies and 133 species of birds.

Then we descend into Trnska cave – a hidden 250 m long karst cave. With lamps we explore some of its passages, stalactites and an underground lake. With a little luck we may also see bats.

Duration: 3 to 4 hours
Difficulty: 4 km walk. To enter the cave we need lamps, which are provided at the farm, and clothes that can get dirty. By agreement it is also possible to reach the entrance of Trnska cave by car.
